Place Value and Money

Place value and number sense are extremely important concepts for students to master. They must be able to see numbers in lots of different ways. For example, 12 can be represented in many different ways.
12 can also be:
~ 1 ten and 2 ones
~ a dozen
~ 6 X 2
~ the number of months in a year
~ the number of hours in a day
~ 3(1) X 4
~ 2 nickels and 2 pennies
~ twelve
Once students begin to understand this important idea, they will be able to use and manipulate numbers in order to solve harder problems.
In this unit, students will begin to represent numbers in different ways: standard (numeric) form, expanded form and word form. They will find the place and value of digits up to the hundred thousands place. Then they will use numbers to compare, order, and round.
