I have included some different activities we have
completed in class.
Please feel free to use any of the below materials
in your classroom.

Name that Genre
In third grade, students learn about
different types of genre. We focus on identifying
fiction,
nonfiction,
plays,
poetry, and
narratives.
Students learn to recognize what they are reading and
quickly adjust their reading styles. When students can identify the
genre of what they are reading, they are more capable of making good
predictions about the text and ultimately comprehend the text
better.
In order to practice and master this concept, we have
completed several activities in whole group lessons and
literacy centers. For one activity, we first took notes on
the features of different genres and then practiced
identifying the genres of four different samples. Then, the
class was divided into groups of three and handed a bag full
of text samples. They had to read each one and determine the
genre by identifying the specific features from their notes.
Once they agreed upon the correct genre, they went around the room and
taped the samples onto the correct chart paper. As a class,
we checked everyone's work until we had all correctly sorted
the text samples. Below are some links that go with
this activity. |

Language Packets
Although I have adapted these in some ways, I
must credit the majority of these packets to Tracy Ortiz-Naney.
