The Daily Five is a structure developed by Joan Moser and Gail Boushey ("The Sisters") that helps students develop into independent learners. It allows students long periods of time to practice authentic reading and writing.

For more detailed information, please visit their website at www.thedailycafe.com.

The five components of the Daily Five are:

*Read to Self

*Read to Someone

Listen to Reading *Work on Writing Word Work

*indicates the most crucial components we practice

In class, I have integrated our Houghton Mifflin series with the Daily Five framework. The students participate in 3-5 rounds of whole group instruction (mini-lessons) which is followed by independent practice time. During this time, I circulate the room holding one-on-one conferences with individual students or strategy group sessions with a small group of students.

What does the Literacy Block look like?

Whole Group Lesson #1 (7-9 minutes)

Student Independent Work with Individual Conferences or Strategy Groups (25-30 minutes)

Whole Group Lesson #2 (7-9 minutes)

Student Independent Work with Individual Conferences or Strategy Groups (25-30 minutes)

Whole Group Lesson #3 (7-9 minutes)

Student Independent Work with Individual Conferences or Strategy Groups (25-30 minutes)

Whole Group Lesson #4 (7-9 minutes)

Student Independent Work with Individual Conferences or Strategy Groups (25-30 minutes)

Whole Group Sharing Time (10 minutes)

As part of the Daily Five, students choose different reading strategies to practice from the CAFE menu in order to become better readers and writers. As part of this system, I help students set goals for their reading and writing, which they are responsible for working on during the Daily Five. These strategies are taught during whole group instruction, one-on-one conferences, and strategy groups.
